Hence, already in 1792, Johnson reported that schools had been opened in Sydney and Parramatta — as well as on Norfolk Island. There, children were instructed in religion and morality — as well as in reading, writing and arithmetic. Many were the children of criminals. Each Christmas, the scholars were examined by the governor; given a suit of clothing; and addressed on the desirability of acquiring a moral and religious education which imparted a sense of duty to their country and to God.20

On his second Sunday in Australia, Johnson performed fourteen weddings. Then, three days later, Governor Phillip swore on the Bible before the Judge Advocate: "I, Arthur Phillip, do declare that I do believe that there is not any transubstantiation in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper." Next Sunday the latter was celebrated.21
