Orwell’s book quickly sold over a million copies: the year 1984 soon became ominous to many thinking people. Multitudes stood by helplessly as the West continued to slide toward socialism and as the Communist Manifesto continued to be implemented on all fronts. With the fall of one country after another to the Reds in the mid-seventies, observers view the advent of 1984 with increasing apprehension.
Even though the Communist Manifesto often seems to be carrying all before it, one must not forget (as the car rental advertisement reminds us) that it has to “try harder” precisely because it is only “number two”. Number one in influence world-wide is still the Bible”!
