The word culture is very familiar to the South African ear. However, whether we always understand the full meaning and scope of culture is another matter. And it is clear that we do not always take account of the possibility—and reality—of bad culture, the result of the fall, and of the necessity to proclaim Christ’s kingship over the entire cultural terrain.
This cultural inspiration or efflux, although sometimes very perverted, is also manifested among non-Christian nations, and may frequently be enjoyed by Christians. It is the fruit of God’s common grace, whereby He maintains His work in man; but that does not detract from the fact that it is only by way of obedience to Christ that bad culture or man-centered culture can be transformed into culture which glorifies God.
